“One of the questions I am asked very often is what can be done about flooding in our area, especially in communities along the Bronx River. River Rescue isn’t a cure-all for flooding, but it shows how small steps can make a difference. By volunteering for River Rescue, the Turf and Landscape Association, the Bronx River Conservancy’s Vinecutters and individuals and families demonstrate their willingness to join forces with government to achieve an important goal,” said Astorino.
Other River Rescue projects on tap for the day include:
- Volunteer individuals, families and groups will be removing debris and litter in the river and along the shoreline between Leewood and Harney roads in Eastchester. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided beginning at 10 a.m. at the parking lot of the northbound rest area just north of Leewood Road.
- Removal of a fallen tree from the river at the field near Elm Street in Tuckahoe by the Turf and Landscape Association;
- Cutting and removal of invasive vines from the area by the Bronx River Parkway Reservation Conservancy’s Vinecutters group (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.);
"I thank the Conservancy, the Vinecutters and the volunteering public, who are always on the scene whenever we issue the call for volunteers,” Astorino said.
