Playland's Boardwalk ReopensCounty Executive Robert P. Astorino Friday celebrated the opening of the popular Playland boardwalk, one day before the amusement park opening day, and more than two weeks ahead of schedule.

"It's terrific that we are able to open the boardwalk weeks ahead of schedule and under budget. I'm thrilled that we were able to get this done for our local residents and all visitors who enjoy walking the boardwalk," said Astorino.

The main boardwalk suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Sandy and a major section, from the Pier Restaurant to the miniature golf course, had to be completely rebuilt. While the entire main boardwalk will be open to the public for the opening weekend of the park, some sections closer to the pool will be closed on certain days during the month to finish repairs. In addition, a section of the pier will be repaired in the next few weeks.

Titan Construction Group, based in White Plains, was hired to complete the project. The total cost of the project was budgeted for $2,099,183 and the County Department of Public Works is projecting that the reconstruction will come in under budget.

Titan used the Brazilian hardwood known as Ipe to rebuild the boardwalk. Ipe can last more than 30 years, compared with the current type of wood used that starts to splinter and warp after 8-10 years. Ipe is also more fire resistant than standard wood.

The north boardwalk (adjacent to the amusement park) was completely demolished during Hurricane Sandy. It has not yet been determined whether the north boardwalk will be rebuilt.
