CE Astorino plants a tree in honor of Arbor DayIn celebration of Arbor Day, County Executive Robert P. Astorino on Friday. helped plant a two-year old, Winter King Hawthorn tree seedling at the county's Saxon Woods Park in White Plains.

Helping Astorino (shown in photo left to right) are Bill Paonessa, superintendent, Saxon Woods Park; Astorino; Katherine Sclafani, assistant superintendent, Saxon Woods Park; and Ken Uhle, a licensed landscape architect with the county parks department.

"Arbor Day takes on added significance this year as hundreds, if not thousands, of trees were lost throughout Westchester as a result of Hurricane Sandy," Astorino said. "We all know the positive impact trees have on our environment and we all need to make a strong effort to restore what was lost during Sandy and other storms."

The Winter King Hawthorn will grow to approximately 20 feet tall at full maturity, and is known for attractive white flowers in spring and small red berries that remain on the tree in winter.
