CE Astorino receives check from businesses for school supplies for the needyCounty Executive Robert P. Astorino was presented on Tuesday Sept. 4 with a symbolic $5,000 check to go towards the county's ongoing effort to collect school supplies for children in need.

The check was resented by Jay Michaels, morning show host of radio station 103.9 WFAS FM, one of the county's partners in the effort, which collected it from 11 local businesses. WFAS will go live on the radio with part of the check presentation.

Operation Backpack was launched in July by Astorino, who acted at the suggestion of Amanda Grant of White Plains, a Girl Scout from Greenburgh's Troop 1936, who is working on her Silver Award for scouting and approached Astorino in a letter about raising supplies.

The project is coordinated by the county's Department of Social Services. In addition to WFAS, the partners are Pass It On Kids Kloset and Operation Prom.

Through this program, school supplies are collected for children and families that receive services from the Westchester Department of Social Services.

Representatives of some of the local businesses who made contributions via WFAS were in attendance. Those business that contributed were: Westchester's Ridge Hill, The Masters School, Julia B Fee, Blythedale Children's Hospital, Michael Bellantoni, Rattet Pasternak, Central Park Dance, Westchester House & Home, Applebee's, The Palisades Mall and Scavone Insurance Center.
