June 14, 2012 -- It's not too late for young adults and local businesses to register for the Private Sector Summer Jobs Initiative, a program to match youth with businesses looking to find an intern for the summer or beyond.
County Executive Robert P. Astorino said that the program, in its third year, is designed to help reduce unemployment for youth ages 18 to 24. In doing so, businesses are helped as well."
"This benefits both the young people and the businesses," said Astorino. "Our youth get paid and experience, while the businesses receive screened candidates who are eager to work and learn.
The program is an initiative of the Westchester-Putnam Investment Board and the Business Council of Westchester. Business interested in finding out more should contact Ebony White of the Business Council at (914) 948-2110. Jobs will be listed at www.westchestersummerjobs.com.
There are no public subsidies to this program, as the businesses pay the salaries. In some instances, there are tax incentives to the businesses.
Last year, the Private Sector Summer Job Initiative hired 184 youth through 55 businesses, which generated about $60,000 in salaries. Out of the youth group, 25 landed permanent jobs when the summer season had ended. This year, the program's goal is to have 200 youth participants, with more businesses.
Some examples of businesses that have participated are: Business of Your Business, Tarrytown House Estates, Candela Systems Corporation, Collins Brothers Movers, Eco Bags, Bilinguals, Inc., Best Web and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.
