basketballchampsCounty Executive Robert P. Astorino last week congratulated the Irvington girls, Mount Vernon boys and Tuckahoe boys basketball teams in winning their respective state championships at a ceremony at the Westchester County Center.

“Winning a state championship is a mark of great success for you the players,” Astorino said. “But it is also a testament to your schools, talented coaches and dedicated parents. Westchester County is proud of you and the team effort that went into making your seasons so remarkable.”

Astorino also noted that, as it does each year, the County Center played an important role in this year’s Section 1 state championships. “The road to the state championships goes through the County Center, so it is fitting that we celebrate your accomplishments here today.”

For the third year in a row, the Irvington Lady Bulldogs, led by Coach Gina Maher, took the state championship. They beat South Jefferson 69-42 to win the Class B title.

The Mount Vernon Knights, led by Coach Bob Cimino, took the Class AA championship for the second straight year by edging out the Rochester Acquinas 61-57.

Bringing the title home for the first time since 1981, the Tuckahoe Tigers, led by Coach Al Visconti, defeated Buffalo Middle College 77-66. The Tigers win capped off a 25-0 undefeated season.
