Westchester County hosted a special reception to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, at the Michaelian Office Building in White Plains. The event honored the rich cultural traditions of Nowruz and recognized the contributions of the Persian and Central Asian communities throughout Westchester.
Nowruz, meaning “new day,” marks the arrival of spring and has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years by millions worldwide. Observed in parts of the Middle East, Central Asia and beyond, Nowruz is a time for reflection, renewal and new beginnings. The celebration is centered on growth, hope and family themes, with symbolic traditions highlighting these values.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “Nowruz is a beautiful celebration of renewal and hope, reminding us of the importance of family, community and new beginnings. Westchester County is home to a wonderful Persian and Central Asian community whose contributions have enriched our County. We proudly celebrate this meaningful tradition and stand with those who welcome the new year with optimism and joy. Nowruz Mobarak!”
Deputy County Executive Richard Wishnie said: “Nowruz is more than a celebration of spring — it is a time for reflection, growth and embracing new opportunities. The values reflected in Nowruz — compassion, renewal and unity — are ones we can all appreciate and carry with us throughout the year. We are honored to celebrate this special occasion with our community.”
During the reception, attendees had the opportunity to connect, learn about Nowruz customs and enjoy traditional Nowruz dishes and music. The reception reflected the welcoming spirit of Nowruz and the County’s ongoing commitment to ensuring every community feels represented.
