This guide was prepared by Westchester Residential Opportunities, Inc.(WRO) in cooperation with the Westchester County Department of Planning. More than 700 multi-family housing dwellings were surveyed to determine the degree of accessibility for individuals with mobility impairments.

The New York State Attorney General’s office provides a “Housing Guide for Seniors” that explains your rights under the law on a range of legal issues from discrimination, protection against harassment, to lease succession rights. You will also find details on financial topics such as tax breaks, heating assistance, and emergency assistance.
This program is designed to make houses and apartments of low-income households more accessible for persons in wheelchairs and with other mobility impairment. It provides grants of up to $25,000 for renters or homeowners to make their housing more accessible.
WRO offers a comprehensive housing counseling program to residents of Westchester County who are age sixty or over. The program provides one-to-one counseling services related to housing emergencies such as termination of utilities and rent or mortgage payment problems. They also provide guidance with applications for Section 8 rental assistance, moving, house sharing, and reverse mortagages.
