BALLFIELDS AT WESTCHESTER COUNTY’S TIBBETTS BROOK PARK CITED BY NEW YORK STATE RECREATION
& PARKS SOCIETY

The Tibbetts Brook Park Athletic Field Complex has won the 2009 New York State Recreation & Parks Society “Agency Award for Outstanding Facility (Class III)”, County Executive Andy Spano has announced.

“We are proud to be recognized for these great ballfields that are enjoyed by thousands of residents each year,” Spano said. “It was a true collaborative effort among county and local governments, along with community groups, that brought this great project to life for the residents of Westchester.”

The Outstanding Facility Award is presented to a project or facility that utilizes community involvement, consideration of maintenance and operation expenses in facility design and construction, and any special factors influencing the planning and development of the project.

The three lighted, all-weather turf fields at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers were constructed as part of Spano’s Westchester “Legacy” program, which sets aside $10 million in capital funds for protection and enhancement of the county’s open space system. One key component of the program addresses the shortage of facilities for active recreation in the county. Completed in the spring of 2007, the fields at Tibbetts are operated and maintained by the City of Yonkers under an inter-municipal agreement.

County Parks Commissioner Joseph A. Stout said, “It is great to be recognized by this prestigious agency for something that so many county residents of all ages are able to enjoy throughout the year.”

The fields at Tibbetts Brook Park were constructed by Bradhurst Construction Company of Mount Pleasant, at a cost of $7.3 million. The fields are open to all Westchester residents and Westchester-based teams.
