County government distributes $74.8 million to local governments and $27 million to school districts in sales tax revenues

Dec. 10, 2008

When people hear that "Westchester taxes" are going up, they tend to blame county governmment. This is a  bum rap. (Read Bum Rap 1)

Did you know that Westchester County government shares its sales tax with our school districts, towns, villages and some cities? In 2008, the county will have distributed $74.8 million to local governments and almost $27 million to the schools.

Westchester, after sharing with local governments and school districts, expects to keep about $362.8 million next year.

Did you know that if Westchester County kept all its sales tax, your county government taxes could go down dramatically?

But then the bad news is that your school districts and local governments would lose this revenue. Westchester County shares its sales tax revenue in an effort to stabilize your other property taxes.

Sales tax is distributed on a per capital basis. Westchester’s four largest cities (New Rochelle, Yonkers, Mount Vernon and White Plains) do not get a portion of the county sales tax as these cities have their own.

Here is a list for the current year of sales tax revenue the county has dispensed:
