Bring old and unused medications to Household Recycling Days

Recognizing the health and environmental hazards associated with improper disposal of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, Westchester County has launched a new "medication take-back" program to ensure the proper disposal of unused and expired medications. This program is the first of its kind in New York State.

The first "medication take-back" events took place in March and April of this year. In just four days, 273 households dropped off more than 700 pounds of pills, liquids, gels and ointments. It was an overwhelming early success. The program will be available at all Household Recycling Days.

Any prescription or over-the-counter pills, liquids, ointments and lotions can be brought in for proper disposal. Pet medications will be accepted too. Keep them in the original container or, if it's not available, put them in a sealable plastic bag. Liquid medications should be in their containers and inside sealable plastic bags. Local pharmacists from Pathmark and county staff will be on hand to accept expired and unused medications for disposal.

So instead of pouring unused or expired medications down the drain or flushing them down the toilet, dispose of them at the next Household Recycling Day event. In doing so, you're taking an important step in protecting your family and the environment.
