Fluorescent Lamp Recycling:

The accumulation of mercury in the environment and food chain is a serious environmental and human health hazard.  Commercial generators (businesses, institutions) must responsibly handle lamps due to their mercury content.  Lamps cannot simply be thrown away as garbage.  Commercial generators may choose to dispose of lamps by traditional hazardous waste methods; however, EPA has streamlined environmental regulations to enable lamps to be treated as “Universal Waste.”  The Universal Waste rules promote recycling over hazardous waste disposal.  Commercial generators are urged to become familiar with all regulatory requirements regarding fluorescent lamps by contacting the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Pollution Prevention Unit at (518) 402-9469 or visit DEC’s website at www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dshm/hzwstman/bulbs2.htm .
