Village of Tarrytown
For an Outstanding Multi Family Dwelling Recycling Education Program
The Village of Tarrytown had
a recycling rate of 33% in 2005. Not a bad rate, yet the Village wanted
to move forward, beyond that accomplishment. To do that the Village has
implemented an admirable multi family building recycling education
program. We expect to see results of these educational efforts in the
2006 data. Press contact: Claudia Mausner, Recycling Chairperson,
Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council@ (914)631-7587.
City of Yonkers, Dept. of Public Works:
For Outstanding
Accomplishments in the Organic Yard Waste Recycling Program
The City of Yonkers has set an example of operational excellence at its
Organic Yard Waste Transfer Site. The City has successfully transferred
over 40,000 tons of yard waste, to metropolitan area commercial
composting facilities, propelling the City into a class of its own in
terms of recycling program achievement. This significant accomplishment
by the City Public Works Department is the result of excellent
operational knowledge, from the department head, Commissioner John
Lizewski, down through the ranks, to and including the staff who operate
the yard waste loading equipment. The Deputy Commissioner and Directors
involved in management of this program are also important people in
making this program work so well. High volumes of material are
brought into a relatively small transfer yard and in the final analysis,
it ran like a well oiled clock. The City of Yonkers has publicly
praised the County’s contractor City Carting of Westchester, for a
steady supply of empty tractor trailers, which facilitates prompt
loading and removal of the yard waste. Yonkers cooperation with
neighboring communities continues, as the City assists them in
transferring significant volumes of yard waste for recycling. Providing
yet another reason for recognition of the City of Yonkers Department of
Public Works.
Starbucks
For Outstanding Accomplishments in Post Consumer Recycling
EffortsWestchester County is home of 18 Starbucks retail stores. In an
effort to reduce their solid waste disposed, Starbucks’ “Grounds for
Garden Program” provides used coffee grinds to customers for use in
vegetable and flower gardens. Starbucks also promotes reuse by using
10% post consumer recycled fiber in their coffee cups, and by offering a
discount to customers who bring their own cup. The Yonkers store manager
Jim Powers is Starbucks’ designated Recycling Coordinated for all
Starbucks in the Westchester area. Mr. Powers visited all Starbucks
outlets to educate staff and insure full compliance. For additional
information, Mr. Powers can be reached at (914) 337-0139 or
(845)598-6781.
Village
of Scarsdale
For Collecting the Most Cell Phones for Recycling
The 2006 “Cell Phone Recycling Award” is presented to the Village of
Scarsdale and Mrs. Donna Conkling, the Village Clerk. Scarsdale
residents recycled over thirteen hundred unwanted cell phones. Proceeds
from the cell phone will help a fund for victims of domestic violence
through the Westchester County & Verizon HopeLine Cell Phone Collection
Program. The community is an example of recycling excellence in
Westchester County.
