Recycling Instructions for TVs and Computer Monitors

The proper disposal of computer monitors and televisions became an issue in 2001 when the Charles Point Recovery Facility in Peekskill (the facility that incinerates Westchester’s garbage and creates electricity in the burning process) classified such items as “non-processable” waste that should be diverted from the trash for separate handling and recycling. Studies have shown that cathode ray tubes (CRTs) – the primary component in computer monitors and televisions – contain lead that can potentially contaminate land, air and water resources. As a result, municipalities in Westchester had to devise a plan for how local residents may dispose of computer monitors and TVs separate from the normal household waste stream.

Local businesses, schools and institutions needing to dispose of TVs or monitors should click on the CRT Recycling Markets, for a list of known electronics recycling companies. Businesses, schools and institutions may also call the County’s Recycling Help Line at 914-813-5420, or e-mail us at sso3@westchestergov.com for a list of those electronics recycling firms.)
