U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, prohibit the intentional release of coolants, such as Freon, to the atmosphere.  Such coolants are found in refrigerators, dehumidifiers, freezers, and air conditioners.

In Westchester, each municipality has its own way of recycling such Freon containing units.  Please click here to view requirements for recycling in your municipality.

If your municipality requires that the Freon be removed prior to municipal collection, click to see a list of Freon Extracting Companies.  The Department of Environmental Facilities issues stickers to such companies that extract freon, so that the unit can be clearly marked as “ready for recycling”.
