Effective July 1, 2008, first-time applicants for a Westchester County Home Improvement License must pass a written exam covering the laws regulating home improvement contractors.  The test must be taken and passed prior to submitting an application for a Westchester County Home Improvement License. Use the study guide in preparation for this written exam. You must contact the Department of Consumer Protection to schedule a date and time to take the exam. You will receive written notification of  the date and time of the exam, as well as the location of the test site.

Exams are by appointment only. No walk-ins will be allowed.

The test is for new applicants only. This requirement does not apply to those seeking to renew a license.

Once an individual/applicant passes the exam, he or she has three months from the date of the examination to submit a completed application, the application fee, all supporting documentation and the verification letter. If the complete application is not submitted in that time period, the individual/applicant must take and pass a new exam.

We strongly encourage you to review the application and all supporting documentation with a department representative prior to your scheduled exam date. This way, if there are any problems with the application or documents you can arrange to have the problems corrected in order to submit the completed application immediately upon your passing the exam. Please note that applications will be accepted Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
