Westchester law requires that home improvement contractors have a county license. A list of licensed contractors is maintained by the Department of Consumer Protection. The department also has a list of renegade renovators you should avoid. Other licensing laws relate to plumbers and electricians. Homeowners can also get information on laws and regulations regarding pesticide usage and safety precautions when maintaining a septic tank.
Download a home improvement license application. Please review Workers’ Compensation Board requirements which took effect Dec. 1, 2008. Applications can be filed in person or through the mail.
Effective July 1, 2008, any first time applicant for a Westchester County Home Improvement License must pass a written exam covering the laws regulating home improvement contractors. 
Home contractors who directly or indirectly arrange or facilitate the financing of a home improvement contract must complete a disclosure form. 
Search here to see if a home improvement contractor or landscaper is licensed to work in Westchester County. According to the law, contractors may not legally work without a valid license.

Home Contractors are reminded that the new law requiring the use of low emission leaf blowers took effect Jan. 1, 2009.
