Eating Better and
Moving More

Department of Senior Programs and Services has joined the national campaign, “You Can! Steps to Healthier Aging.” This campaign is part of County Executive Andy Spano’s Westchester Moves initiative and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Steps to a Healthier US Initiative.

Nutrition Site Directory

The Nutrition Program is composed of two segments: meals served at congregate sites throughout the County and the Home Delivered Meals program. All the nutrition sites and the Home Delivered Meals programs are monitored by the Food and Nutrition Services Division, which plans the meals according to standards set by federal and state regulations and monitors the entire program to ensure compliance with federal, state and county regulations.

Meals are provided five or more days per week at approved nutrition sites and multi-purpose centers throughout the County and to homebound elderly who are unable to participate at congregate sites. Each meal provides at least 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for an individual.

The New York State Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to improve the well-being of those elderly who are at high nutritional risk, with particular emphasis on provision of services to the low income, minority, frail and isolated elderly.

Nutrition Education and Counseling are provided to seniors participating in either the congregate or home delivered meals programs. Materials and informational programs are provided on a regularly scheduled basis and designed to assist older persons in making proper choices of food in order to maintain good health through improved nutritional status. Activities include counseling on: budgeting, proper food preparation and storage, individual nutrition needs, and the relationship of diet to illness.
